Keyboarding
Software: Dance Mat Typing website and Microsoft Office Word 365
Overview:
The kids will utilize two hands on the keyboard this year using only their left hand on the left side of the keyboard and only the right hand on only the right side of the keyboard. They will use their thumb on the space-bar, pinky fingers on any key with a word such as Shift, Enter, and Tab, and their pointer fingers on all letters, numbers and punctuation marks.
As the kids become proficient with this type of keyboarding, they naturally start using their other fingers on the corresponding side of the keyboard such as their middle finger, ring finger, and pinky on more letters. This becomes a nice transition to Home Row keyboarding in which they use all their fingers on the keyboard in 3rd grade.
Basic Operations
Software: Kid Pix 3D 2012 (Since we now save to the cloud, we spend very little time in Kid Pix.)
Overview:
The kids learn and review logging into and off the computer, parts of the Windows desktop, components of a computer, window/folder concept, saving a file, opening a file, and the other basics of using a computer. During this time the kids will be drawing in Kid Pix to create a file that is meaningful to them. We will save at least one or two meaningful files per class period to develop proficiency in saving files.
Computer Skills
The goal in Basic Operations is to lay a solid foundation on which to build each student's computer ability throughout the year.
Microsoft Word
Software: Microsoft Office Word 365

Computer Skills
The computer skills include but are not limited inserting and moving the cursor, keyboarding and editing text, The kids will change the font, font size, font color, and align words/paragraphs. The kids will be introduced to the parts of MS Word. Keyboarding includes typing a single paragraph funny story that includes rhyming words to practice specific letter combinations and blends.
